What is the difference between LPR and ANPR Technology for AI Security systems

by | | 0 comment(s)

The name LPR is a general term used for all license plate technology from viewing to actual reading and identication of characters. However, Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) is a specific term for AI systems that detect the plates and recognize the characters.

Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology is a Cortex AI surveillance system that uses optical character recognition (OCR) to automatically identify and record the license plate numbers of vehicles. It is often used for security and law enforcement purposes, as well as for toll collection, parking management, and traffic analysis.

Cortex ANPR systems consist of a special camera that has AI capabilities that recognize and extract license plate numbers from images and stores them in a searchable database. The camera captures an image of a vehicle's license plate, and the internal software processes the image to extract the alphanumeric characters that can then stored individually. The extracted license plate number can then be sent to a Cortex NVR and compared to a database of registered vehicles or a list of red listed or green listed vehicles. If a match is found, an alert is generated and the appropriate action is taken, such as triggering notifications or alerting the owners.

There are several advantages to using ANPR technology. It is a fast and efficient way to identify vehicles, as it can process thousands of license plates continously. It is also accurate, as it can accurately recognize and extract license plate numbers even in difficult lighting conditions or when the plates are partially obscured. The system can even rate the percentage of accuracy.

Cortex ANPR technology is highly flexible, as it can be integrated into a variety of systems. For example, it can be used in conjunction with security cameras to monitor access points and alert authorities to the presence of a vehicle on a watchlist. It can also be used in traffic management systems to monitor traffic flow and identify vehicles that are violating traffic laws.

There are some limitations to ANPR technology when deployed in scenes that are not optimized. One issue is that it requires a clear and unobstructed view of the license plate, which can be difficult to achieve in some situations. It is also susceptible to motion and blurring, which can create incorrect matches.

Overall, ANPR technology is a powerful tool for identifying and tracking vehicles, and it has a wide range of applications in security, law enforcement, and traffic management. The benefits of this technology make it a valuable asset for organizations looking to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their operations. New and innovative ideas for LPR technology are always coming up, what can ANPR tech do for you?
